Push for Electric Vehicles Means Plastics May Take Charge

Detroit — It should not be a shock to automotive suppliers that the plastics industry has an electric future.

By 2025, electric and hybrid electric vehicles could account for 33 percent of total vehicle production worldwide, according to data from IHS Markit Ltd., and suppliers are being tapped by OEMs to put different composites and materials into real-world vehicle applications.

Extruder makers hopeful for strong 2018

End market diversity is the blessing for manufacturers of extruders.

Extruders are used to make pipe and siding in the construction market, sheet and blown film in packaging and tubing for medical. Not to mention custom extrusion for everything from aerospace to writing instruments.

One slow market segment can be offset by another hot one, machinery officials said.

In construction, single-family housing starts were up 8 percent year to date through October, from the same period a year ago, on pace to hit an annual rate of 877,000 in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Starts are beginning to get a boost from reconstruction activity from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

PLASTICS Adds Educational Event Targeting Executives to NPE2018

New series of half-day symposia with networking lunches will feature speakers from financial institutions, consumer brands, plastics manufacturing companies and national associations

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) said The Plastics Leadership Summit will provide industry and end-market senior management an educational outlet as well as a chance to network with peers and speakers at NPE2018.

The summit, for which there is a separate registration fee, will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday—May 8-10—from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Speakers and presentation are organized by broader themes assigned to each day: Profit (Tuesday), Product (Wednesday) and Production (Thursday).

MIT students fortify concrete by adding recycled plastic

Adding bits of irradiated plastic water bottles could cut cement industry’s carbon emissions.

MIT undergraduate students have found that, by exposing plastic flakes to small, harmless doses of gamma radiation, then pulverizing the flakes into a fine powder, they can mix the plastic with cement paste to produce concrete that is up to 20 percent stronger than conventional concrete.

Hurricane Irma forces SPE to cancel thermoforming conference

Orlando, Fla. — With meteorologists predicting that Hurricane Irma will be a Category 5 storm by the time it hits Florida, the Society of Plastics Engineers Thermoforming Division has announced that it is canceling its annual Thermoforming Conference.

The 26th annual event was scheduled for Sept. 11-13 in Orlando.
